Writer/directors Ahern and Loughman clearly have a lot of love for what they're doing and, at its best, ‘Extra Ordinary' is a tale of self-discovery alive with light humour and an awkward romance. But the film is way too uneven - with a wonky tone, hit-and-miss jokes, wobbly acting, and too many slapstick sight gags - to be anything more than merely ordinary.

**_A charming Irish ghost story that is consistently hilarious; but Chris de Burgh is definitely going to sue_**

>_There is only one way to appease a ghost. You must do the things it asks you. The ghosts of a nation sometimes ask very big things; and they must be appeased whatever the cost._

- Pádraig Pearse; "Ghosts" (1915)

>_Some ghosts are so quiet you would hardly know they were there._

- Bernie McGill; _The Butterfly Cabinet_ (2011)

The debut feature from writer/directors Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman, _Extra Ordinary_ (the reason for it being two words is explained in the movie) is an unexpectedly hilarious Irish ghost story. I'm sure there are other examples in the Irish comedy/ghost genre, but the only one I can think of off-hand is Neil Jordan's well-intentioned but poorly executed _High Spirits_ (1988), a film built almost exclusively on "_look how weird and strange the Oorish are_" humour. _Extra Ordinary_, on the other hand, isn't about the Irishness of the characters at all, focusing instead on their inherent decency, and, in the case of the villain, his tendency to call upon Astaroth so as to achieve musical success. As you do. It's a quant film in all the right ways, leaning into the trope of small-town people forced to deal with situations far beyond their ability, and it gets a lot of mileage out of just how completely out of their depth they find themselves. The humour is low-key and irreverent, but it doesn't rely on winking at an audience it assumes to be Irish – I would imagine most of the laughs will translate well to international markets. Some of the nuances will certainly be lost, but, by and large, the film is working with a broader palette by juxtaposing the supernatural with the utterly banal. And it works exceptionally well.

In an unspecified rural Irish town, Rose Dooley (Agatha Ellis) is a young girl with the ability to talk to ghosts, who works with her father, famed paranormal researcher Vincent Dooley (Risteard Cooper, playing the character as if he's in an ultra-serious existentialist drama). However, when an incident involving a dog, a bus, and a haunted pothole (don't ask), leaves Vincent dead, Rose swears never to use her ability again. Fast-forward 20-odd years, and the now adult Rose (stand-up comedienne Maeve Higgins, who is also credited with "additional writing") is a genial but lonely driving instructor whose only real friend is her sister Sailor (Terri Chandler). Rose receives calls every day from those looking for help contacting the dead, but she steadfastly refuses to get involved. Meanwhile, Martin Martin (a superb Barry Ward, whose physicality reminded me of Michael Crawford) and his daughter Sarah (Emma Coleman) are being haunted by Martin's deceased wife, Bonnie, and so Martin contacts Rose, pretending he wants a driving lesson. However, when he reveals his true intentions, although the two have really clicked, Rose refuses to help. At the same time, one-hit-wonder Christian Winter (a hilarious Will Forte in full caricature mode), living in Ireland as a tax exile, is desperate to make a comeback, and has abducted a local virgin, who he must sacrifice to Astaroth on the night of the blood moon. Which wouldn't be a problem except that his wife, Claudia (a spectacularly acerbic Claudia O'Doherty), accidentally causes the young girl to, well, explode. With the blood moon in a couple of days, Christian must find another virgin, and lands on Sarah. However, Rose has decided to relent and help Martin banish Bonnie, but upon arriving at the house, she quickly realises they have bigger problems when she finds Emma levitating (never a good sign). Deducing that she's imprisoned in a "holding spell", Rose tells Martin that the only way they can save her is by collecting the ectoplasm of seven ghosts, and they can only do that by letting each ghost temporarily possess Martin. And so begins a race against time as Rose and Martin try to save Sarah, and Christian attempts to stop them.

_Extra Ordinary_ is one of those films that could have been distractingly sardonic if it wasn't made with such genuine warmth. Sure, the humour is, for the most part, fairly irreverent, but it's done in such a way as to endear the characters to the audience due to their imperfections rather than encourage us to laugh at their failings. For example, when Rose explains to Martin what she has to do to release Sarah, he responds, "_oh, so like_ The Exorcist?", to which she says, completely seriously, "_I don't know, I've never met him._" It's a funny moment, but so too is it a rather sweet moment, and a lot of the humour is in this vein; on the edge of being sarcastic, but never cynical.

Another important aspect of the humour is that the jokes come thick and fast from literally the opening few seconds. Indeed, there's rarely a scene without some element of humour somewhere in it. This isn't the type of comedy where everything gets serious at certain points, or where the characters' experiences force them to make major changes to their lives because they have learned this lesson and that lesson. Instead, from the opening voiceover to literally the last words spoken, this is wall-to-wall humour. For example, Martin is essentially a victim of "_domestic violence by spectre_" (his deceased wife enjoys roughing him up), but Ahern and Loughman never allow this to become an issue as so many comedy writers do, using humour as a platform to examine serious topics. There's nothing wrong with that, of course, but it's just not how _Extra Ordinary_ operates. Along the same lines, there's Martin's relationship with Sarah. He's introduced as being overly protective of her (his great fear is that she'll end up "_a homeless sex maniac living on the streets and snorting hash_"), whilst she views him as a bit of an embarrassment. However, their relationship never leads to the clichéd old scene where [insert emotion here] they learn to value one another's flaws. Again, that's just not the film's _modus operandi_, and it's all the fresher because of it.

As mentioned, the humour is introduced in the first few seconds, as the film opens with a VHS recording of Vincent Dooley's public access TV show (featuring some of the most low-rent production values you'll ever see), with Dooley explaining that the reason cheese gives people bad dreams is because cheese is made of the same stuff as ghosts, and hence, ghosts find cheese easy to inhabit. In fact, he tells us, most cheese is haunted, as we watch a montage of stock footage of cheese complete with VHS tracking lines along the bottom of the screen. And this is the tone in which the entire film takes place; it never really departs from this register (which does have the effect of letting you know almost instantly whether you're likely to enjoy it). Later on, a major plot point is Christian's "_virgin rod_". This is a magical staff which can point Christian towards a suitable virgin for sacrifice (although as Claudia points out, it looks like a huge wooden dildo). To avail of its services, he must hold it up, whisper an incantation, then drop it, and it will point towards a virgin. He must then walk a few feet in that direction, pick it up, and repeat. And yes, it's as absurdly ridiculous as it sounds, and the shot of him wandering across an empty field as he continually picks up and drops the stick is absolutely hilarious.

The film doesn't rely too heavily on sight-gags, but there's a moment towards the end that is side-splitting. In a climactic car chase, as Sarah floats down the road towards the sacrificial altar, she's followed by Christian and Claudia in one car and Rose and Martin in another. The first few shots are all tight interiors, but when it finally cuts to a wide shot, we realise why – the entire chase is taking place at around 10mph, as they are all moving at the speed Sarah is floating. It's one of the most slapstick moments, and even without the increasingly frustrated Claudia's solution to speed things up, it's one of the best scenes in the film – but what she does to get things moving elevate it to a whole other level. And I won't spoil anything, but the "ginger werewolf scene" has to be seen to be believed; suffice to say, it's pure _Father Ted_ humour, with an elaborate build-up that makes the utter mundanity of the punchline exquisite (point of fact, I'd be shocked to find that Ahern and Loughman weren't _Ted_ fans, as the film has very similar DNA).

However, easily the single most hilarious moment is when we see a brief clip of Christian's claim to fame, a song called "Cosmic Woman" that is so obviously a riff on Chris de Burgh's "A Spaceman Came Travelling By" (1976), I'm pretty sure he could sue for royalties. Everything about it, from the cheesy special effects in the video to the instrumental refrain to the self-important lyrics, just screams out where it was taken from. At the screening I attended, the film had been getting a lot of laughs, but, much to my surprise, this scene didn't, with only a few of us finding it really funny. It was only when I was leaving the theatre I realised why – the majority of the audience was too young to be in on the joke. If you don't know the song, do yourself a favour and watch the video for "Spaceman" on YouTube before seeing the film. It'll enrich your viewing experience, trust me.

Elsewhere, there are plenty of smaller moments that really stand out. For example, right at the start, a "_based on a true story_" subtitle appears on screen. Perhaps getting a dig at the seemingly never-ending spate of horror films to make this claim, however tenuous, no sooner has the subtitle appeared when a garbage truck quite literally drives across the frame, erasing the words behind it. A beautiful and perfectly judged self-reflexive moment if ever there was one. Along the same lines is cinematographer James Mather's tendency to use overly dramatic crash pans (usually accompanied by a similarly overly-dramatic sound effect), especially in car scenes, with the incongruity between hyperkinetic form and utterly mundane content never failing to make me chuckle. Speaking of overly-dramatic shots, in one particular scene Mather even uses the Brian De Palma staple that is the split diopter, except he does so in the most mundane setting you could possibly imagine (in a scene in which a person holds a mop in front of their face as a disguise), with predictably hilarious results. Another shot worth mentioning is one I've seen used on a few posters, and it's "_The Exorcist_ shot", which sees Rose standing in Martin's garden looking up at the illuminated window. There's also Christian's truly hilarious driving lesson (his mortal fear is being behind the wheel of a car), which sees him spend more time putting on a pair of driving gloves than actually driving. Managing to go all of four feet (and somehow giving himself a bloody nose in the process), he decides he's had enough for the day, and then sits silently and motionless, until Rose realises he's waiting for her to come around and open his door. Also consistently funny is Claudia's inability to understand why the virgin must be sacrificed on a particular night, with her refrain of "_just kill the bitch_" one of the film's best running gags.

Finally, I'd be remiss here if I didn't mention Barry Ward's performance as Martin. Due to the nature of the plot, he has to play multiple characters, but as each one still looks like Martin, he has to convey everything with tone of voice and physicality, so as he moves from leering old man to chain-smoking nagging wife, you really see his range as a performer as he differentiates from one spirit to the next.

_Extra Ordinary_ is a distinctly Irish film, but it's one whose self-aware brand of Irishness should travel pretty well. Strong performances all-round, constant laughs, some terrific sight-gags, and a generally warm tone make for a fine film. For some, the highpoint will be Forte's ludicrously over-the-top Christian, for others, it will be the genuinely touching character beats between Rose and Martin. Irrespective of your preference, however, I would strongly recommend this truly charming film.

For the literary fans of JRR Tolkien, this film will serve as a very exciting chapter of your fandom; when you get to see a character called Sam you'll be sure to gasp with glee - and let me assure you they really emphasise his name, along with a myriad of other moments just like it. You can’t miss them. They know who this movie is for, because it sure as hell won't be appealing to anyone else.

I'll admit I had some interest when I heard that a Tolkien biopic was in the works, but now that I've actually seen it, I'm very unsure about who was supposed to want this movie? It's just an unbearably clichéd biopic that makes sure it ticks all the boxes a biopic for some reason must. I don't understand how this formula gets forced in to the real-life story of every person who has ever lived a time that was put to screenplay. It's so boring, and it's so **done**. Who was crying out for a movie that examined famed author J. R. R. Tolkien when he... went from mildly unpopular at fancy pants school, to mildly popular at fancy pants school? Not when he was writing the most famous fantasy series of all time. Not when he was at war (or at least not more than about a cumulative 6 minutes of flashforwards at war). Not his relationship with C. S. Lewis. Not even about going to codebreaking school. Nope, a young Tolkien whose not very likeable and rather lofty for someone who supposedly comes from such a poor background. It does touch on some references to his future writing, adding a little bit of a fantastical element, but it's **so** afraid of this, its best element, that really only seems to imply that old mate Jirt wouldn't have come up with a single idea for Lord of the Rings unless some sort of external stimulus for it fell in his lap. Another biopic cliché.

_Final rating:★★ - Had some things that appeal to me, but a poor finished product._

Viggo Mortensen and Smit-McPhee deliver great performances but it doesn't really hook you up.
The clocks stopped at 1:17

The Road is directed by John Hillcoat (The Proposition) and written by Joe Penhall (Enduring Love). Based on the 2006 novel of the same name by American author Cormac McCarthy (No Country For Old Men), the film stars Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee as a father and his son trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world.

How do you sell such a sombre piece to the film loving public? I'm not sure I personally can, such is the whirly like emotions dominating my thoughts. OK, it's a grim and bleak film, of that there's no doubt. Director Hillcoat is not out to make a thrilling end of the world actioner. Staying faithful to McCarthy's novel, this is now a world where animal & plant life is practically extinct, where this particular part of America is lawless and populated by cannibal types. Humanity has long since left the arena. How we arrived at such desolation is not clear - intentionally so. We are now just witnessing the after effects of something world changing, the fall out personally involving us as we hit the road with man & boy.

Hillcoat and his cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe have painted a clinically dead world from which to tell the story. Scorched soil is home to threadbare trees, the skyline punctured by the wreckage of man's progress passed, storms come and go as if to taunt the characters. It's a living hell that begs the question on why would anyone want to survive in it? So here's the thing that finally hit me like a sledgehammer some five days after watching the film, it's not just the bleakness of the apocalypse that gnaws away at you, it's also the expertly portrayed study of parenting. So emotively played by Mortensen, with Smit-McPhee essaying incredible vulnerability, it sinks the heart the longer the movie goes on. All of which is leading up to the ending, where we get something absorbing, revealing and utterly smart.

Tough viewing for sure, but compelling and thought provoking throughout. 8/10

I have... **No** idea what I just watched... But that bit in the middle was like something straight out of a _Payday 2_ heist, so I'm cool.

_Final rating:★★★ - I liked it. Would personally recommend you give it a go._
***Unpredictable bleak Alaskan adventure, mystery, thriller***

An author and wolf expert (Jeffrey Wright) arrives at a remote village in Alaska to help rid the town of a wolf problem that has resulted in a few dead children. Riley Keough plays the troubled mother and Alexander Skarsgård her taciturn husband coming home from Iraq. James Badge Dale appears as the local sheriff while Julian Black Antelope is on hand as a curious AmerIndian named Cheeon.

"Hold the Dark" (2018) is a combination mystery/drama/adventure/thriller/horror. It’s original, unpredictable and dead serious with elements of movies like “The Grey” (2011), “Runaway Train” (1985), “Wendigo” (2001), “The Frozen Ground” (2013), “The North Star” (1996), “Joyride” (1977) and “The Edge” (1997), not to mention a “Apocalypse Now” (or Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness) and even a little from the “Friday the 13th” franchise, albeit without the goofiness. Imagine if the band Agalloch made a movie and that’s pretty much “Hold the Dark” (there’s even a snippet from an Agalloch-like band in the movie).

It’s based on the book by William Giraldi and some viewers have complained that key revelations weren’t obvious enough in the film. Well, I never read the book and wasn’t able to figure out these revelations, but this didn’t prevent me from appreciating this artistic nigh masterpiece. Afterward, I looked-up the revelations and they put the pieces of the puzzle together; yet the clues are all there (in the movie) if you watch closely. My wife watched the film separately and WAS able to glean these revelations. But, again, not being able to figure out every detail did NOT prevent me from valuing this great movie.

The film runs 2 hours, 5 minutes and was shot in Alberta, Canada (Lethbridge & Calgary), and Morocco.

I wanted to see this since it began to crop up on the internet as an upcoming movie, taken me long enough to locate it and now I don’t really know how I feel. Maybe a bit visually raped.

This has such a fucking weak beginning, like what is the relevance to the blonde bimbo being around and literally has no point to the rest of the movie whatsoever. Apart from being one of those cunts who says “Hey, wait a second” as you’re about to leave then instead of giving the burning words, says “never mind.” You never find out, I doubt it was Oscar worthy or chocolate filled coins worthy but still fucking irritating.

Also I did not have any forewarning about the genital mutilation in this movie, well almost. Like if movies are going to do this to me can you PLEASE advertise it better so I can avoid at all costs because it makes me want to die.

OKAY. So freshman lady spots this activist guy and seems that he tickles her fancy as she instantly becomes a fully interested activist and thinks fuck it I’ll go risk my life in the middle of fuck knows where with all of these random people that think I’m a sheltered suburban fool. I mean she’s even on the wrong side of the leader because his girlfriend has clicked on that our lovely freshman wants to suck his dick resulting in her attendance. These people scream out virgin sacrificing cult at all times.

Really brilliant and wise idea taking these rich white kids out to a deprived area, not asking to be noticed in the slightest are we. One even shouts in clear earshot about child abuse seeing a family carting their trike on a bicycle, skills on how to not get killed are just seriously flawless guys.

Everything is just painfully obvious and this movie relies 90% on gore, which is actually done extremely well. There’s an eye scene and it’s captured perfectly as if you can watch it without looking away or squirming then maybe you should go join that tribe as you clearly belong there. I mean they just fuck off their belongings and go straight into the jungle unarmed, is anyone really shocked when the plane crashes and they end up in a bucket load of shit? Quite literally when one of them also explodes from the anus which was one of many “and the point of this scene is?” moments. I don’t need to see that in my life you trash.

I did like the nice man who looked like a bumble bee and seemed to be the go to guy if you wanted a body part hacked off for supper, he seemed like he could have moonlighted as a MUA. Had his contours down to a tee. Most of them reacted more offended by the poo scene than seeing eachother being led off one by one for torture, again I will say all of the gore scenes were fucking brutal and do give many points for those.

Some parts are just a bit fucking stupid, one guy actually has a wank after seeing one of them just being like fuck this and slicing her neck open. Really, a wank. I’m all for the activity but there’s a time and a place and that was not where I imagine I would be feeling the moment can take me. They get the tribe stoned as an escape plan, again I’m not feeling the genius in this bunch? Dare I also mention none think to ever remove their luminous yellow suits, would have thought that would have been a pretty logical thing to do during an escape attempt….

I could think of better holidays than being ditched in a jungle and eaten by demonic smurfs.
**Their worst fear came from outside of their protest.**

I have enjoyed the Eli Roth's films, even though in some cases I've rated them lower than average rating it had received. But this is not what I was looking for. This is a terror-horror, not actual horror with supernatural or sci-fi viruses. I've learnt the storyline before the watch, but the film was too violent. Even for most of the grown ups. Usually I won't feel a thing for film tortures, because 'fake' is the word always pops up in my mind whenever I see gore.

Anyway, these days, killings in the films are considered entertainment. There is a separate group of fans who follow this kind of theme. But for me, the cannibalism was the one most disturbed. I have no issue with killings, but cannibalism brings totally uneasy. The story was decent, but intentional. You would guess most of the parts. But this film was not about that, just to make you go off of your seat with discomfortable and it succeeds on that.

It was totally opposite to 'Embrace of the Serpent'. It was inspired by the 80s Italian film with the similar storyline. The film was about fighting for the survival of passengers after their plane got crashed in the Amazon forest who are now hunted by Amazon tribes. There's already a sequel on making titled 'Beyond the Green Inferno'. I don't think so, it is a recommendable film, but some are doing that for fun, and some to challenge their friends. Overall, a decent production, with casting, locations and visuals. But I won't favour it.

_4/10_
Didn't hate but didn't care for it. Acting was pretty bad save for a few scenes by Lorenza Izzo though these characters' naivety were absolutely annoying. As Eli Roth movies go, probably one of his better movies, and yet I'm only giving it a 3/5.

Shocking nobody, _Mortal Engines_ was not very good. Trying to jam way too much into two hours than is reasonable, it instead delivers on zero things. I guess I was **kind of** interested in the character of Shrike, but that was really the whole of my positive experience with _Mortal Engines_. Maybe if this thing had come out about eight years ago in the **height** of the bizarre Steam Punk obsession that gripped the globe (even if it was a weird sort of obsession where everybody called everything they like, and themselves Steam Punk but it really wasn't required to have any relation to actual Steam Punk) then the movie could have at least done well financially, but there's no world wherein this version of _Mortal Engines_ is a consumate film.

_Final rating:★★ - Had some things that appeal to me, but a poor finished product._
Good attempt. Different, unique, and the sets are great. Yeah, it has some weak points, and some of the writing/editing could have been better. But this is a refreshing change in the usual sci-fi stuff that has been coming out. Marvel and DC are flooding the market with their super heroes (not all bad, just too much) I detest all these vampire/werewolf/zombie crap (all of it) This is a nice change, and I enjoyed it!
I did not know what to expect when I started to watch this, but I was pleasantly surprised. Ignore the negative reviews. Those are probably written by zombies/vampires/werewolves....
I have to say that I liked this movie a lot. It is kind of fantasy, science fiction (emphasis on fiction here) and steam punk (or perhaps I should say diesel punk) mixed together.

The world is a fairly dark post apocalyptic world where moving predator cities prays on each other. The entire concept is really quite ridiculous of course but it makes for some really fantastic and spectacular special effects and I am a sucker for spectacular special effects.

In addition the overall story holds together fairly well. That is, in the context of the ludicrous world that is the background of this story in the first place of course. It is quite straightforward without too much annoying social or green preaching that plagues so many movies nowadays. Somewhat predictable but overall a good vehicle for the plentiful action.

I also liked most of the characters. Both the bad guy and the good guys had decent charisma with the exception of Tom who was a bit of a naive whiner although he got it together towards the end.

There where few flaws. Nothing really major except that, in one scene at the end, the city of London was shown against the wall and it was bloody tiny compared to the wall. The main bad guy’s last resort was to pummel London against the wall and was expected to break it down. Before in the movie London was depicted as really huge. That scene really screwed that and made him delusional.

Apart from that, end Tom’s whining and naivety, I really liked this movie. It was the kind of over the top, fantasy/fiction movie with a big budget that you do not see every day. Of course the dickwads, a.ka “critics”) at Rotten Tomatoes and other mainstream media assholes did their best to tell everyone how bad it was. As usual that’s just the stuff that comes out of the south end of a north bound bull.

Very epic movie, strong storyline and also stunning graphics.. This is very recommended movie to watch with entire family.
The story may not be the most original, with its Shakespearean turn overs, but it is well shaped and Serkis performance is remarkable.

The animation of the apes, which was already superb in the previous movie, finally reaches a level in which you can believe they are more real than the human actors.

Maybe a bit too long, but a good time for a not totally dumb movie.

Some interesting moments amongst a lot of the nonsense I dislike from these supernatural horror movies that seem to make up the rules as they go (as a way to gin up some "scares"). CM Punk isn't a very charismatic actor though funny does have some shades of Bruce Campbell (could pass off as his son, actually) but I did like Trieste Kelly Dunn and there some great gore effects, particularly in the third act, that almost makes this worthwhile. Almost. **2.5/5**
Basically a body horror, but the house is an extra body.
It was okay. I know it's a very "in" thing at the moment to not have a single likable character in your horror movie, which is the route that _Girl on the Third Floor_ takes, but I personally don't dig that.

_Final rating:★★½ - Had a lot that appealed to me, didn’t quite work as a whole._
